WHAT IS PAPS

PAPS is a bar coded label system used to expedite the clearance of goods into the U.S. The labels are sequentially numbered in pairs.
One pair is required for each transaction at the U.S. border.

Getting Set up to use the PAPS (PRE-ARRIVAL PROCESSING SYSTEM)

The SCAC code is assigned by:

National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.
1001 North Fairfax
Suite 600
Alexandria, VA 22314

There is a $40.00 (US) fee for the code which must be renewed annually.
This process can take 7 to 10 days. When you receive the letter assigning you an SCAC, please read it carefully for further instructions.

PAPS (PRE-ARRIVAL PROCESSING SYSTEM)

Standard format is “Pairs” - 2 labels per transaction number.

THERE ARE 3 KEY ELEMENTS TO A PAPS LABEL:

1.) SCAC code - this is a 4 digit alpha code that is obtained by applying to “The American Trucking Association”.
2.) Sequential start number - each PAPS pair is sequentially numbered with the same number. There is no specific length for this number, but the recommendation is 6 to 8 digits. As a final digit we add a check digit to each number.
3.) Customer name - there is a 20 character limit including spaces/punctuation.

HOW ARE PAPS LABELS SUPPLIED:
PAPS labels measure 2-3/4” wide by 0.8” tall, and are supplied 40 labels
(20 pairs) on a 8-1/2” x 11” sheet. Optionally, you can order PAPS labels supplied on a roll. Both formats are approved by U.S. customs.

HOW TO ORDER PAPS LABELS:
Ordering is easy, just let us know:
a.) Your 4 digit SCAC code.
